Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 ? August 5, 1962), was a Golden Globe award winning American actress, singer, model, Hollywood icon, cultural icon, fashion icon, pop icon and sex symbol. She is known for her comedic acting roles and screen presence. Monroe became one of the most popular movie stars of the 1950s and early 1960s. During the later stages of her career, she worked towards serious roles and her fame surpassed that of many entertainers of her time.
Her death at thirty six was classified as "probable suicide." Many individuals including Jack Clemmons, the first LAPD Police officer to arrive at the death scene believed that she was murdered. She is the only female on the Forbes top earning dead celebrities list.

미국의 배우. 1926년 로스앤젤레스에서 출생하였다. 본명은 노마 제인 모텐슨(Norma Jeane Mortenson)이다. 어린시절을 불우한 환경에서 보냈다. 사진모델 시절 찍은 누드사진을 계기로 1948년 영화 《Scudda-Hoo! Scudda-Hay!》에 첫 출연하였으며, 《아스팔트 정글 The Asphalt Jungle》(1950)에서 인정을 받았고, 《나이아가라 Niagara》(1953)에서 주연을 맡아 폭발적인 인기를 얻었다.
아름다운 금발과 푸른 눈, 전신에서 발산하는 독특한 성적 매력은 그녀를 순식간에 세계적인 섹스 심벌로 올려 놓았다. 그러나 야구선수 조 디마지오, 극작가 A.밀러를 포함한 세 번의 결혼실패 등 사생활은 불행하였다. 할리우드라는 거대한 톱니바퀴에 끌려 약물중독이 되었고, 마침내 자살로 보여지는 의문의 죽음으로 생을 마감했다.
