Casabianca - Vicky Leandros(그리스 가수)
Casabianca란 다음과 같은 것들을 지칭하는 말입니다.
1. Felicia Hemans라는 영국의 한 시인이 19세기 초 Luc Casabianca라는 사람을 두고 쓴 詩의 제목입니다.
2. Luc-Julien-Joseph Casabianca는 불란서 한 해군장교의 이름이며, 그가 죽죽으면서 그의 배 L'Orient in Abukir와 12살의 자기 아들도 함께 잃는다.
3. 카사비앙카는 불란서의 한 섬 Corsica에 자리잡고 있는 집단 부락의 한 부분을 가리키는 이름이기도 하며,
4. 또한 2차세계대전 중에 Corsica섬을 해방시키기 위해 투입되었던 유명한 잠수함의 이름이기도 합니다.

역사
이 시는 1798년 나일강 전투에서 불란서의 군함 L'Orient 위에서 일어났던 실화를 기념하는 글이다. 그 군함의 지휘관이었던 Louis de Casabianca의 어린 아들(10살, 12살, 또는 13살이었다고 여러가지로 전해진다.) Giocante는 탄약고가 폭팔해버릴지 모르는 불길이 번지는데도 그는 자기 임무자리를 뜨지 않고 고수하고 있었다.
전해지는 얘기
젊은 카사비앙카는 그의 아버지 명령없이는 조금도 자기자리를 뜨지 않는다. (일설에는 영국군에게 배가 나포되는 걸 방해하기 위해 영웅적으로 불을 질렀다는 믿기지 않는 얘기도 있다.) 그 소년은 영국 수병들에게 의해 양측면에서 공격을 받고, 발각되었지만 그 뒤에 이어지는 얘기는 없다. 작가는 역사적인 사실을 기록하기 보다는 역사적인 사실을 토대로 기념하고 기리기 위하여 다음과 같이 이어 써가고 있다.
젊고 촉망한 소년은 그대로 버티고 서있었네
마치 폭풍을 지배하기 위해 태어나기라도 한 것처럼
영웅의 피를 이어 받은 녀석이었지
어린아이 모습이지만 자랑스런 소년,
저 아래서 다 죽어가는
아버지의 명령이 없이는
불길이 치솟아도 자리를 떠나지 않네
그러나 그 아버지의 소리는 더 이상 들리지 않았어
작가는 아버지에게 지시를 내려달라고 애절하게 요청하는 대목을 가슴을 찢듯이 반복적으로 넣는다.
말씀해 주세요, 아버지. 제 임무가 아직 남았는지...
아버지 말씀하세요! 다시 한 번 그는 소리친다. 저 언제 죽을지 모르겠습니다만 우리 아버지, 아직 이자리를 지켜야 합니까? 그러나 아버지는 더 이상 아무 말씀이 없으시다.
작가는 이렇게 격찬을 하며 결론을 내립니다
돛대, 키, 기(旗)는
다 제자리에 그대로 이지만
사라져간 것 중 가장 숭고한 것은
젊은 충성심이었지.
(Yet beautiful and bright he stood,
As born to rule the storm;
A creature of heroic blood,
A proud, though childlike form.
The flames rolled on?he would not go
Without his Father's word;
That father, faint in death below,
His voice no longer heard.
Hemans has him repeatedly, and heart-rendingly, calling to his father for instructions: "'Say, Father, say/If yet my task is done;'" "'Speak, father!' once again he cried/'If I may yet be gone!;'" and "shouted but once more aloud/ 'My father! must I stay?'" Alas, there is, of course, no response.
She concludes by commending the performances of both ship and boy:
With mast, and helm, and pennon fair,
That well had borne their part?
But the noblest thing which perished there
Was that young faithful heart.)

이 시는 미국에서 1850~1950년대, 약 1세기 간에 걸쳐 초등학교 교재의 한 표본이었으며, 풍자적인 측면에서 자주 인용되는 글입니다.
